Must watch sporting events this weekend!

November 5, 2021

Punters are spoiled for choice this weekend with a bumper weekend of sports action. Here are some events that you simply can’t miss.

BOXING

Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant: Boxing will have its first undisputed super middleweight champion when WBA (Super), WBO and WBC champion Alvarez faces IBF champion Plant at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Can Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) put an end to Canelo’s reign as the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world or will Canelo (56-1-2, 38 KOs) further cement his legacy by becoming the first undisputed super middleweight champion in boxing history?

CRICKET

T20 Cricket World Cup: We’re now getting to the business end of the competition. Saturday’s matches will decide the semi-finalists. The scenarios are as such:

If SA beat England and Australia beat West Indies, then all three countries will be equal on points and NRR will determine the top two. That would likely be England and Australia.

If SA beat England and Australia lose to West Indies, England and SA qualify for the semi-finals.

If SA lose to England and Australia lose to West Indies, then either SA or Australia will qualify for the semis on NRR. The likelihood is that it would be Australia.

If SA lose to England and Australia beat West Indies, SA are out.

FOOTBALL

DStv Premiership: All 16 teams are in action this weekend, with the standout fixture being that of sixth-placed Orlando Pirates going to seventh-placed Kaizer Chiefs in a huge Soweto derby. When betting, it might be worth looking at coach Stuart Baxter’s record with Chiefs against Pirates. In nine games, Chiefs have won three, Pirates only one and there have been five draws.

Weekend fixtures:

(Fri)

SuperSport vs TS Galaxy (we say 2-0)

(Sat)

Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates (1-1)

Stellenbosch vs Golden Arrows (1-0)

Royal AM vs Baroka (2-0)

Swallows vs Sekhukhune Utd (0-0)

Chippa Utd vs Maritzburg (0-1)

Gallants vs Sundowns (0-3)

AmaZulu vs CT City (0-1)

English Premiership: One week it’s Ole in, the next week it’s Ole out. Who knows which way the wind will blow this weekend as Man United host Man City in a huge cross-town derby.

Weekend fixtures:

(Fri)

Southampton vs Aston Villa (0-0)

Manchester United Manchester City (1-3)

Chelsea vs Burnley (2-0)

Crystal Palace vs Wolves (1-1)

Brentford vs Norwich (2-1)

Brighton vs Newcastle (2-0)

Everton vs Tottenham (2-2)

Leeds vs Leicester (1-2)

Arsenal v Watford (3-0)

West Ham vs Liverpool (1-1)

FORMULA ONE

Mexico Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton vs Max Verstappen again? That would certainly be the way to bet as we have enjoyed one of the tightest title-chases in recent years. Verstappen leads the seven-time world champion as we head into the final stages of the season’s calendar. Best to wait until after qualifying and then whoever performs best of the two in qualifying to bet on that driver to win the race from pole.

GOLF

Portugal Masters: Seven South Africans teed up in the first two rounds of this European Tour event.

MOTO GP

Algarve GP: Honda has announced Marc Marquez will miss this weekend’s MotoGP Algarve Grand Prix in Portugal after suffering a concussion in a training incident. Honda issued a statement noting Marquez crashed during an off-road training session and suffered a concussion last week. Still feeling unwell, he has been advised to miss this weekend’s penultimate round of the 2021 MotoGP season in Portugal.

RUGBY

There are six rugby matches which form part of the end-of-year Internationals. From a South African perspective, the big one is the repeat of the 2019 World Cup semi-final, where the Boks take on Wales. On that occasion the Boks won 19-16 and the matches between these two are normally tight. Last week the All Blacks hammered Wales 40-17, but expect a closer margin here.

We say: Boks by 6

Weekend fixtures:

(Sat)

Ireland vs Japan

Italy vs New Zealand

England vs Tonga

Wales vs SA

France vs Argentina

(Sun)

Scotland vs Australia

UFC 268

Kamal Usman (19-1-0) defends his welterweight belt against Colby Covington (16-2-0) in the headline event. It’s a rematch of a brutal previous fight they had. Perhaps the most exciting fight on the card is a contest between Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler. Considering both are wild men typically involved in absolute slugfests, you can expect an instant classic.

Main card

Kamaru Usman (c) vs Colby Covington

Rose Namajunas (c) vs Zhang Weili

Frankie Edgar vs Marlon Vera

Shane Burgos vs Billy Quarantillo

ustin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler
