Things To Watch This Weekend

October 8, 2021

Heavyweight title fight: Tyson Fury believes Deontay Wilder is the most dangerous fighter in the heavyweight division and would beat any other rival, including Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua. Fighting Wilder a third time – in Las Vegas on Sunday morning (SA time) – is like “clipping wires on an atomic bomb”, according to Fury. The pair have fought twice before, with the first contest being called a 12-round draw, before Fury stopped Wilder inside seven rounds in the rematch.

Indian Premier League: We’re reaching the business end of the annual money-spinning T20 competition. After today’s two matches, the knockouts start on Sunday. Games haven’t been decided yet, so be sure to follow us on Twitter for the latest updates.

World Cup qualifier (Africa): Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has challenged his side to “do everything to get six points” from back-to-back matches against Ethiopia as the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers enter top gear. South Africa visit Ethiopia for Saturday’s Group G encounter, before hosting Ethiopia at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday. After a draw against Zimbabwe and a 1-0 win over Ghana, Bafana Bafana lead Group G, one point ahead of second-placed Ghana and Ethiopia, who are third on the standings.

Uefa qualifiers: The European Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup are reaching their business end with the penultimate week of qualifying over the ndext two weekends. Once these games have taken place, teams will have only one or two matches each left to play between 11 and 16 November, after which the 10 direct qualifiers and 12 play-off contenders will be confirmed.

Turkish Grand Prix: The big news ahead of this week’s race is that Lewis Hamilton will have a 10-place grid penalty after receiving a penalty for using too many engine parts. Mercedes have taken a fourth part – one more than permitted –  to reduce the risks of him suffering a failure during the tight championship run-in. But he has taken only one power-unit component – the internal combustion engine – so escapes a full grid drop. The aim is to lose as little ground to title rival Max Verstappen as possible. The Red Bull driver trails Hamilton by two points in the championship after recovering from the back of the grid after his one engine penalty to finish second in Russia at the last race.

United Rugby Championship: South African sides the Bulls, Sharks and Stormers have been taking pastings in the new northern hemisphere competition. They are coming up against full-strength sides, while they are missing their own Springboks. So, expect some more disappointment for now.
