Ryder Cup: Players to back on each side

September 24, 2021

USA

Dustin Johnson, 6-5-0: Arguably the best, and most consistent, player in the world over the past decade, reigning Masters champion Johnson also has a wonderful record at the venue, finishing third and tie-seventh at the previous two Majors held here.

Collin Morikawa, rookie: Morikawa may be a rookie on the US team, but expect the two-time Major champion to be one of the stars, particularly in the foursomes, where his laser-like accuracy will make him tough to beat.

Bryson DeChambeau, rookie: Another first-timer on the US team with great pedigree, DeChambeau is the biggest hitter on either side and has a great short game to match. The biggest question for the US team might be who to pair the enigmatic former US Open champion with.

Jordan Spieth, 4-3-2: The return to form of Spieth makes him a natural pick for Team USA. Not only does he bring a solid game, particularly on the greens, but he is a vital part of the team off the course too. Spieth finished runner-up to Jason Day here at the 2015 PGA Championship.

Europe

Jon Rahm, 1-2-0: He’s the reigning US Open champion and the world No 1, so it is obvious that Rahm will be a key player for the Europeans in only his second Ryder Cup appearance. It’s not like he took a step back in his previous event, though, beating Tiger Woods in the singles.

Rory McIlroy, 11-9-4: McIlroy tends to up his game for team events, which can only mean trouble for the Americans, since his normal level is pretty solid. As a team leader, he will play most matches and there will be no shortage of volunteers to play alongside the Irish four-time Major champion.

Tommy Fleetwood, 4-1-0: The hero of the last Ryder Cup, Fleetwood epitomises what the European team spirit is all about. A solid ball striker, he’s so good in matchplay because he never really makes any big mistakes – and when the putter gets hot he is tough to match.

Viktor Hovland, rookie: The rookie on the European team has more than proven himself with wins on the PGA and European Tours, and has recently broken into the top 10 on the world ranking. Seems to have the personality type to be a great fit in an already tight team unit.
