Guide to 11 SA golfers in PGA Championship

There are 11 South Africans in the field which gives the country its best chance of winning the PGA Championship since Gary Player last did so in 1972, writes Gary Lemke.

That means it’s 49 years since a South African won this Major and it’s also been nine years since Ernie Els was the last Major champion, when he won the 2012 British Open.

The PGA Championship is one of men’s golf’s four Majors and will be played on the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, which is six hours behind South Africa in terms of time. 

Here we have a look at the 11 South Africans with their odds and their chances. The time is their first round tee off (SA time).

1.11pm: Dylan Frittelli. Ranked No81 in the world, he finished T33rd in last year’s PGA Championship. His best finish in a Major is T5th in the 2020 Masters. He has missed the cut in 5 of his last 8 tournaments. Odds: 400/1

1.22pm: George Coetzee. Ranked No96 in the world, he didn’t play in last year’s PGA Championship. His best finish in a Major is T7th in the 2015 PGA Championship. He has had 3 top 20s in his last 5 tournaments. Odds: 1000/1

1.27pm: Garrick Higgo. Ranked No51 in the world, this is his first Major. He has won 2 of his last 3 tournaments o the European Tour and finished top 10 in his last four. Odds: 150/1

2.11pm: Louis Oosthuizen. Ranked No31 in the world, he finished T33rd in last year’s PGA Championship. His best finish in a Major is winning the 2010 British Open. He has made the cut in all 7 of his most recent tournaments with two top 10s. Odds: 90/1

2.17pm: Charl Schwartzel. Ranked No109 in the world, he finished T58th in last year’s PGA Championship. His best finish in a Major is winning the 2011 Masters. He has made the cut in all 6 of his most recent tournaments. Odds: 85/1

2.55pm: Erik van Rooyen. Ranked No78 in the world, he finished T51st in last year’s PGA Championship. His best finish in a Major is T8th the 2019 PGA Championship. He has missed the cut in his last 3 most recent tournaments. Odds: 500/1

6.41pm: Daniel van Tonder. Ranked No79 in the world, this is his first Major. He has one win and 2 missed cuts in his most recent 5 tournaments. Odds: 1000/1

8.42pm: Dean Burmester. Ranked No89 in the world, he missed the cut at the 2019 US Open. This is his first PGA Championship. He has finished in the top 10 in his last 3 European Tour events, including one win. Odds: 400/1

7.20pm: Branden Grace. Ranked No92 in the world, he missed the cut in the 2019 PGA Championship. His best finish in a Major is 3rd in the 2015 PGA Championship. He has won one and missed the cut once in his last 8 tournaments. Odds: 200/1

7.42pm: Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Ranked No41 in the world, he missed the cut  in last year’s PGA Championship. He has made the cut in all 15 of his most recent tournaments, including winning the SA Open. Odds: 200/1

8.04pm: Brandon Stone. Ranked No87 in the world, he missed the cut in the 2019 PGA Championship. His best finish in a Major is T12th in the 2018 PGA Championship. He has missed the cut in his last 2 tournaments. Odds: 500/1
