Ahead of the two Europa League, semi-final second legs, we look at some stats that apply to the matches. Manchester United beat Roma 6-2 in the first leg and it’s impossible to see a miracle happening to send the Italians through, but Arsenal are involved in an all-to-play for tie after losing the first leg 2-1 to Villarreal.
ROMA (2) VS MANCHESTER UNITED (6)
In the history of the Uefa Cup/Europa League, of the 225 previous instances of a team losing the first leg of a two-legged knockout tie by 4+ goals, just two have progressed; FK Partizan v QPR in the 1984-85 last 32 and Real Madrid v Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1985-86 last 16
Manchester United have won five of their last six meetings with Roma in all competitions, drawing the other 1-1 in December 2007
Roma have not lost both legs of a two-legged knockout tie in major European competition (excluding qualifiers) since the 2015-16 Champions League last 16 versus Real Madrid, while they last did so in the Uefa Cup/Europa League in the 2009-10 last 16 v Panathinaikos
Manchester United have won each of their last four Europa League games, last winning five successive matches in all European competition in May 2011, before losing to Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley.
ARSENAL (1) VS VILLARREAL (2)
Villarreal have progressed from 15 of their 16 two-legged ties in major European competition when winning the first leg – the only exception was in the 2015-16 Europa League semi-final, when they went out to Liverpool despite winning the first leg.
Arsenal are without a win in their last two home games in European competition (D1 L1), after winning 11 out of 13 before that, with the Gunners hoping to avoid going three on home soil without victory in Europe for the first time since September 2003 (6 games).
Villarreal are unbeaten in 13 games in European competition (W12 D1), winning each of their last nine and last suffering defeat in April 2019 (0-2 v Valencia in the Europa League quarter-final 2nd leg).
Arsenal have lost just one of their 11 knockout clashes with Spanish opponents on home soil (W7 D3), with that sole defeat coming in February 2016 against Barcelona in the Champions League Last 16 (0-2)
Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno has either scored or assisted in each of his seven starts in the Europa League this season (6 goals, 3 assists), with only one player providing goal involvements in more consecutive starts in a single season in the competition since 2009-10 (Willian – 9 with Chelsea in 18-19)
